Whakakotahitanga | FASD Clinical Diagnostic Guidelines

Whakakotahitanga Training Programme

This training programme has been developed in consultation with Health NZ/Te Whatu Ora and Child Development Services Whaikaha and with guidance from a steering group consisting of equal representation of both tangata tiriti and tangata whenua across whānau advisory perspectives, tikanga advisors, university lecturers, and the range of professional disciplines primarily involved in FASD assessment and diagnosis (paediatrics, psychology, speech and language therapy, social work).

Learning Objectives

Clinicians will gain a more in-depth understanding of:

  • The development of guidelines for Aotearoa
  • The prevalence and impact of FASD in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • The diagnostic process and assessment principles, including aim and purpose of assessment, e.g. to gain an in-depth understanding of the individual within their whānau, community and culture, identify strengths, needs and strategies to promote wellbeing.
  • The team approach connected to the community to ensure referral, effective assessment, clinical and cultural supervision.
  • Incorporate cultural competence and sensitivity into the assessment process, including the unique needs and perspectives of Māori communities as well as barriers to care faced by different communities, and adapt your approach accordingly.
  • Put into practice a holistic assessment approach that supports understanding the individual’s context, relationship building, and collaborative decision-making key to FASD referral/assessment and helps to determine PAE, e.g. Kara Te Whata-Maynard’s Ngā Rāuru-ā-Māui model.
  • Practice assessment and diagnosis on case studies
  • Develop whānau centred reporting and post-diagnosis support to individuals and their whānau (family).
