Overview
This training programme supports those working with whānau and pēpi across Aotearoa to build their knowledge and confidence in promoting safe sleep practices that help prevent Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI).
Modules are self-paced and fully online. Each module includes video content and a short quiz. Complete all modules to receive your certificate of completion.
SUDI Prevention Training is designed for anyone working with whānau and pēpi, including health professionals such as midwives, Plunket/Tamariki Ora nurses, community health workers, support services, and others involved in pregnancy and infant care.
The programme covers the key risk factors for SUDI, evidence-based safe sleep guidance, and culturally responsive approaches that support effective engagement with whānau. It includes a focus on working with Māori and Pacific whānau, who continue to experience higher rates of SUDI in Aotearoa.

Introduction to SUDI
Introduces what SUDI means clinically, who is most affected in Aotearoa, and the key risk factors. Hear from practitioners about why preventing SUDI is a shared responsibility across health, social services, and community settings.
Engaging with Whānau
Explores how to engage with whānau respectfully and practically, grounded in whanaungatanga. Covers how personal, cultural, and systemic bias can impact care, and introduces non-judgemental approaches to safe sleep conversations.
Foundations for Safe Sleep Framework
Introduces the Foundations for Safe Sleep framework and its five core messages: Face Up, Face Clear, Firm & Flat, Free, Fathers & Family. Covers how everyone in pēpē care plays a role in supporting safe sleep.
SUDI Risk Factors
Explores the key risk factors associated with increased SUDI risk. Covers how to discuss risk with care, empathy, and practical support — without blame or judgement.
Protective Factors
Covers the protective factors supporting pēpē wellbeing and reducing SUDI risk: safe sleep environments, breastfeeding, whānau support, immunisation, and culturally grounded services.
Safe Sleep Practices
Explores how safe sleep practices apply anytime, every time, anywhere. Prepares practitioners for safe sleep conversations whenever and wherever they engage with whānau.
